Antibalas brings DIRTY MONEY to Toronto!
Internationally-recognized, multi-ethnic, Afrobeat powerhouse orchestra ANTIBALAS have been busy these past few years. They led the charge for Afrobeat revivalism over 14 year ago and 5 albums later they have come full circle.
The Antibalas story started in a decrepit old loft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in 1994. Dap-Kings founder Gabe Roth, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe and Antibalas founder Martin Perna all shared the space and regularly collaborated musically. This early friendship would forge multiple musical paths that would regularly criss-cross.
On their most recent, self-titled album, Antibalas reconvened at the Daptone’s House of Soul Studios in Brooklyn, 5 years after the release of their last album Security. With Gabe Roth on production duty, its essentially a reunion of a very busy group of musicians who have recorded and/or performed with: TV on the Radio, Iron and Wine, Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, The Roots, Angelique Kidjo, Ornette Coleman, David Byrne, Wale, Spoon, The Black Keys, Imogen Heap, Lee Fields, Melvin Gibbs and The Budos Band – as well as worked on their own musical projects: Ocote Soul Sounds, Superhuman Happiness, Piano Music & Song Trio, Chico Mann, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Sugar Minott and Fu-Arkist-Ra.
Aside from bringing the funk wherever it is needed, Antibalas can also add ‘hit-Broadway musical’ to their list of accolades. Bill T. Jones’ Tony award winning musical biography FELA! counted on the musical direction of several Antibalas members.
Now, reunited and back on the road for the first time in many years, Antibalas is ready to bring the funk to Toronto and Montreal this week!
Catch Antibalas this Tuesday (tomorrow night) in Toronto at Lee’s Palace and on Wednesday night as part of Pop Montreal (with Nomadic Massive and K’Naan)!!
