Chilean Future Hip-Hop from K.T.R.!

In Canada there is a saying “Hip Hop isn’t Dead, it Just Moved to North” which is a valid argument but if you want to talk about Hip Hop culture and where it really is thriving – it’s in the ‘third world’.

Places like Latin America have adopted Hip Hop not as consumers but as a true art form and form of expression. Places like Cuba have fully developed institutions that use Hip Hop as a tool for social development (see El Templo de Hip Hop). And Chile, for years, has been developing a powerful Hip Hop community that has created some of the best graffiti writers, breakdancers, DJs and MCs (see Ana Tijoux).

And a true testament of Hip Hop as a developed culture is when you start seeing artists take the medium of Hip Hop and start pushing its boundaries and using it as a jumping point for more forward thinking musical experimentation.

Rapper Ka and DJ/Producer Patoxhea are K.T.R. and have been active in the Hip Hop movement for over 15 years. And instead of making attempts at some sort of commercialized sound, they have taken their years of experience and talent to create something vastly unique.

Their brand new album ‘Androides‘ is a collection of tracks reminiscent of the sort of left-field Hip Hop that Anti-Pop Consortium or The Infesticons were making at the beginning of the 2000s. Glitchy, Electronic but still very much interconnected with boom bap style Hip Hop. It helps that K.T.R. reached out to forward thinking Global Bass producers like ZZK Records’ Chancha Via Circuito and Diamante Records’ Daniel Klauser to support on the beats.

Check out this fantastic new album from K.T.R. below and support real Hip Hop music that is alive and well in the South.
