LAMC in NYC ~ Preview Post!

Every July, for the past 13 years, the best in Alternative Latin music converge on the big apple for 4 days of music, panel discussions, schmoozin’ and all-around partying. The Latin Alternative Music Conference is THE place to be if you’re in any way connected to this weirdo-Latino artistic community and can you believe the Dos Mundos Familia has never once attended?!

Well that’s all going to change, because this week Dos Mundos is in NEW YORK! Yes we are in town for our first ever LAMC and we’re super excited to connect with all of our friends from around the world who will be at the conference.

We hope to come back fat with footage, interviews and content for the radio/webseries/blog – but we’re also really looking forward to all the great shows that are happening this week.

So here are the top 5 things (in no particular order) that we are super excited to check out while at LAMC!

1. CALLE 13 / ANA TIJOUX / RITMO MACHINE @ Prospect Park (FRIDAY JULY 13)

WOW! What can you say about this line-up?! First of all, CALLE 13 is like the biggest name in Latin Music period. Their live show is legendary and they’ve been known to shut down entire city blocks thanks to the legions of fans that always rush to catch them live! ANA TIJOUX is definitely one of our favourites, her last show in TO was a complete blast and her band is one of the best sounding I’ve heard in a long time. On top of all this you get RITMO MACHINE, the deadly combo of legendary percussionist (son of Willie) and former member of Cypress Hill, ERIC BOBO alongside Chilean DJ/Producer LATIN BITMAN. Oh and did I mention…it’s a FREE SHOW!?

2. 3BALL MTY (NYC debut) / VENUS X @ SOBs (FRIDAY JULY 13)

Mexican rudeboys 3BALL MTY have been around for a few years now, but since they were taken under the wing of el maestro TOY SELECTAH the sky’s the limit. Their single ‘Inténtalo’ was an absolute smash and hit number one on the Billboard Latin Charts. They join the founder of NYC’s GHE2OGOTH1K parties, VENUS X, a tastemaker who’s style and skills have made her a regular in a variety of cultural contexts. From fashion shows and art parties, to illegal raves and political manifestations. 3Ball MTY and Venus X tear up SOBs on Friday, July 13 / $15 door.

3. OUTERNATIONAL / CAPTAIN PLANET @ Bowery Electric (Wednesday July 11)

If you haven’t yet heard of OUTERNATIONAL, just wait a minute. These rockers from NYC have been stirring up trouble all over North American with their “Todos Somos Ilegales” (We Are All Illegals) Tour. The “Todos Somos Ilegales” album boasts help from such big names as Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Rene ‘Residente’ Perez (Calle 13). They are joined by one of our new favourite DJ/Producers CAPTAIN PLANET, who’s remix work has appeared on projects all over the world, including one of our fave remixes of Ana Tijoux’ ‘Shock’. Outernationl and Captain Planet play the Bowery Electric on Wednesday, July 11 / $10 or Free with LAMC badge.

4. KINKY / LOS AUTENTICOS DECADENTES / 3BALL MTY / DJ RAFF @ Central Park Summerstage (Saturday July 14)

Mexican Dance Rockers KINKY were actually discovered (more or less) at an LAMC many years ago. Since then, they’ve toured the world, released 5 albums and made many many fans. They are joined by classic Argentine Ska/Rockers LOS AUTENTICOS DECADENTES who have spent the past 25+ years making music that mixes traditional Argentinian sounds with Ska and rock. They are joined by 3Ball MTY and Chilean DJ and beatmaker DJ RAFF. This HUGE show happens on Saturday, July 14 @ Central Park’s Summerstage for FREE.

5. QUE BAJO with GEKO JONES / UPROOT ANDY / TOY SELECTAH / SABO / MR MOOMBAH / CERO 39 / CANYON CODY + MORE! @ Tammany Hall (Saturday July 14)

The QUE BAJO parties have been a long running institution in the city of New York and during LAMC they are known for throwing the biggest jam of the whole conference. This year is no different as residents GEKO JONES and UPROOT ANDY are joined by TOY SELEACTAH (Mad Decent/Mexico), SABO (Sol Selectas/USA), MR MOOMBAH (Shake That Bass/Colombia), CERO 39 (Polen Records/Colombia), CANYON CODY (Subsuelo/USA) and live band EL REINO DEL MAR (USA/COLOMBIA). This lineup is packed and I’m sure the dancefloor will be too! Que Bajo goes down on Saturday, July 14 @ Tammany Hall / $10.

I feel like we just scratched the surface here, because there’s just SO MUCH HAPPENING this week in NYC. Dos Mundos is here all week so you know we’ll have a ton of post-LAMC posts for the website! YAY!
